Gateway Beyond – fighting poverty and injustice

Bloom is an initiative of Gateway Baptist Church in Brisbane, Australia, and is one of many important ministries that are expressions of love and concern for the most vulnerable in our global community.

Jason Elsmore, Senior Pastor of Gateway, says:

“The heart of Jesus is to ‘bring good news to the poor; freedom for the prisoners and to release the oppressed.’ His heart breaks for the many precious young girls that are suffering abuse tonight in brothels all over Cambodia. Young girls just as precious and with as much potential as my daughters and yours. God has been at work in the hearts of the people in our church as we have heard of their plight.

It is a real joy to see Bloom training centre established in Phnom Penh. The vocational training that many vulnerable young girls will receive through Bloom will bring freedom from the enslavement of their past and allow them to grow into the women that God has created them to be. Lives will be changed now and forever.’

Along with the Bloom project in Cambodia, Gateway also fights poverty and injustice in areas including Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Uganda, West Africa and Cambodia with projects encompassing:

  • community development
  • income generation
  • literacy and health education
  • caring for orphaned children
  • vocational training for victims of trafficking
  • providing medical help

Through the efforts of Gateway Beyond, the social justice arm of the church, we come together as the body of Christ to effect change in our world. We follow the footsteps of Christ in reaching out to the most vulnerable, the most destitute and the most broken – right from our own backyard out to the corners of the Earth. With cultural sensitivity and respect, we work to find practical solutions to the problems in our world, assisting and empowering people from varied cultural, religious and socio-economic backgrounds.
