Freedom Journey Program

“Empowering survivors to overcome the past, embrace their potential, and create hope-filled futures”

When a sex-trafficking survivor arrives at the Bloom Asia Freedom Centre, she often carries little more than the clothes on her back — and a heavy burden of pain and trauma. Thanks to people, we’re able to offer her a new beginning.

After 15 years of walking alongside survivors, we know true healing only happens with long-term, trauma-informed support.

The Freedom Journey Program is a four-phase pathway that supports young women  to overcome the past, embrace their potential, and build independent, hope-filled lives. Each phase is designed to meet survivors where they are — from building trust and stability, to learning new skills, gaining real-world experience, and stepping into independence.

        FAQ

What is the Freedom Journey Program?

The Freedom Journey Program is a multi-phase, trauma-informed program designed to empower sex-trafficking survivors to heal from trauma, rebuild their lives, and achieve long-term freedom.

How long does the Freedom Journey Program take?

The program length varies depending on each participant’s needs and readiness. Survivors progress at their own pace through four key phases, focusing on safety, healing, education, and work experience. On average, survivors spend 2-3 years with us.

How do you measure a survivor’s progress?

Understanding where a survivor is up to on her journey, and enabling her to also understand this, is vital to her overall progress. Our fundamental approach to any form of measurement is that it is underpinned by trust-based relationships where interactions between staff and program participants are authentic, consistent, predictable and supportive. We also engage a number of tools and assessments to help understand each survivor’s unique journey, including:

Assessment of Survivor Outcomes (ASO): Developed by International Justice Mission, the ASO is a standardised instrument used to evaluate a survivor’s progress toward restoration and identify their strengths and vulnerabilities. It measures progress in areas like safety, legal protection, mental well-being, economic empowerment, social support, and physical well-being.

Values Identification: In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Values Identification is a foundational process that helps individuals clarify what truly matters to them, guiding their actions toward a meaningful and fulfilling life. Clarifying your values in ACT is crucial because it Guides Decision-Making, Enhances Psychological Flexibility and Promotes Meaningful Living.

Depression and Anxiety Scale (DASS-21): The DASS-21 is a 21-item self-report questionnaire designed to measure the severity of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms.

Post Traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI): The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, is a self-report questionnaire that measures the positive psychological changes individuals may experience following a traumatic event. It’s designed to assess the extent to which people report experiencing positive outcomes, such as increased personal strength, improved relationships, or a deeper appreciation of life, after enduring a traumatic experience.

Vocational Assessment and Certification: From basic certificates through to advanced, depending on a survivor’s capacity and interest. Each certificate requires passing a formal examination and is endorsed by relevant government bodies.

Grade 9 Equivalency Assessment and Certificate: This Ministry-of-Education-endorsed course enables survivors to identify gaps in their fundamental education and assists them to fast-track their learning to fill these gaps.

Khmer Literacy Assessment: Program Participants are enrolled in a literacy program to ensure they have the ability to read and write their local language.

How can someone join the Freedom Journey Program?

Survivors are typically referred through trusted community partners or referred by survivors within the program. Every journey begins with a personal assessment to ensure the program is a good fit for the individual’s goals and needs.

Is there a cost for survivors to participate?

No. The Freedom Journey Program is offered at no cost to survivors, thanks to the generosity of our donors, partners, and community supporters. Survivors are given a living allowance while they are in the program to support their day-to-day needs.

        Where is the program located?

We are based in Southeast Asia.

What makes the Freedom Journey Program different from other programs?

Freedom Journey is a survivor-centred, trauma-informed program that meets each participant where they are. We believe in long-term, individualised support, allowing survivors to progress at their own pace toward true self-sufficiency.

Can survivors stay involved after they graduate?

Yes! Graduates are invited to stay connected through ongoing counselling and social worker support, alumni events, and leadership opportunities within the program, creating a powerful network of ongoing support.

Is the program faith-based, secular, or open to all backgrounds?

Bloom Asia is a faith-driven organisation, committed to sharing the love and hope of Jesus Christ through compassionate service and transformative action. As a Christian non-profit group, we believe our work is a reflection of God’s love and a response to His call to care for the poor, the marginalised, and those in need.

However, the Freedom Journey Program welcomes survivors of all backgrounds, and nobody is pressured to participate in faith-based activities.

        Ready to Walk Alongside Survivors?

Freedom is a journey — and you can be part of her story.

Whether by giving, volunteering, or simply sharing the mission, your support helps survivors reclaim their futures.
